Day
Four - a.k.a. Saturday . . .
A relatively easy day - Roc and Scott went to a couple of the
early morning seminars, while the majority of us slept in - relatively
speaking! We didn't meet for breakfast till 9 a.m. !!!! Elaine
gave us an update on Harry. It's not food poisoning, but appears
to be an intestinal blockage. They'd done tests and were trying
to keep Harry comfortable.
Jerry and Kathy Wickersham went over to the plant so Jerry could
run in the autocross competition while Kathy cheered him on. He
had three runs and managed to bring his time down each run. He
proudly announced that he beat the GrandSport!!!!
I had broken a nail the day before (all you ladies can relate
to the urgency of my need) and Joan wanted to get a polish-change
- so we recruited Nancy and her rented Blazer to go in search of
a nail salon. Meanwhile, our men-folk headed out to find the starting
location for one of the many road tours that the local Corvette
Club had laid out to entertain all the out-of-staters. We found
a salon that took walk-ins on the second try and then went to a
local mall to kill some time. We found a cute "get well" card
for Harry and decided that a fruit basket or flowers were not a
good idea to send to the hospital since we were all on-the-road,
but a nice golf shirt from the Museum would be! Having made our
card purchase and our decision, we headed back to the hotel to
see what was up with our men-folk. We all went back to the Museum
to volunteer for a while longer and we picked out a real sharp
red shirt with a diagonal white and black stripe for Harry.
Roc had spoken to the dealership in Nitro, WV and learned his
car wasn't as bad as they originally suspected. The rear wheel
bearing was fine - it was a U-joint that went. The service manager
gave Roc his home number and agreed to open the garage on Sunday
so he could get his Vette before we started our trip back home.
I think Roc and Nancy set a "Longest Distance Driven" record
for the NJ Caravan participants!!!!!
2:00 was our scheduled brick-laying ceremony . . . the only one
allowed during this busy weekend.
WOW! Did they make us feel special!!!!!
Our club brick is now right smack in the center of the front walkway!
Section 40. They removed the large blank brick that was already
down as well as nine of the small individual blank bricks right
next to it. NCM Executive Director Wendell Strode and Membership
Director Stephanie Ferrell were with us for the whole procedure.
The officers placed the club brick in the walkway and then one
by one we were each handed the rubber mallet and our brick to place
in the walkway. We took TONS of photos. Jim said they didn't take
as many photos at the last Presidential Inauguration!!!!! We were
each given a framed certificate commemorating our personal placement
of our club and individual bricks. We then unfurled each of our
three caravan banners and Stephanie took our picture - with several
of our cameras - holding each of them. We can now send the banners
and a photo of them at the Museum to our two big sponsors - Paramus
Auto Mall and Harry Green Chevrolet in West Virginia.
We had also purchased a series of bricks in the special 5th Anniversary
section of the walkway. It was thrilling to see that our row of
bricks runs across the top of this section! We sure do have friends
in high places!!!!!
Saturday night was to be a special night out for all the Caravan
Captains and their Co-Captains - but it was in Nashville via a
mini-caravan !!! Roc had a full day of driving ahead of him for
Sunday - and didn't need any more driving tonight - so he and I
made an appearance at the Captain's pre-mini-caravan cocktail hour
which was in our hotel, and then joined our club members for the
evening. This hotel has a huge atrium in the center and we had
hung our New Jersey Caravan Banner on the hotel balcony so all
the arriving Captains could see it. Several club banners were also
on the railings.
Scott had been bitten by the "auction bug" at Carlisle,
and decided to stay at the NCM for the evening's auction of special
memorabilia. The rest of us made plans to eat dinner as a group
(26 in all) at the Montana restaurant. It's only about 1/4 mile
from the hotel, so we all walked. Unfortunately, no restaurant
takes firm reservations during Corvette events - so we had to wait
for tables. We agreed to be broken up into four groups to speed
things along - and even at that it took over an hour to get our
first table. We were sitting around their massive flagpole garden
in the hot, humid heat. They served us ice water and then platters
of chips and dip to keep us happy while we waited. I think everyone
enjoyed their food. And the service, once you got a table, was
great. Little Abbi fell asleep on her Dad's shoulder before it
was all over - but the rest of us managed to stay awake :-) We
gave Elaine the card and shirt to take over to Harry in the morning.
There could be highlights that I forgot to write down - but I'll
report that this is the end of Day Four as I recall it!
